Outdoor Playground Safety Surfacing

A safer Playground Flooring is also mandatory where the equipment has fall height of over 1000 millimetres, or if installed onto any other surface other than well-maintained turf at any height.  It is not permissible even to put low-level equipment on tarmac or concrete. The Head Injury Criterion (HIC) is the standard used to establish if safety flooring is needed by determining the chances of a head injury and expected severity of the impact resulting from accidents on playground equipment of different heights.

As part of our service, we are able to advise where safer Playground Flooring really should be included, the most suitable type for your individual application, and the exact amount of falling space required around the equipment. Our experienced and qualified staff can also inform you about situations where Outdoor Safety Flooring is not necessarily required. This is the case with some of our Climbing Walls. 

We offer four different types of Playground Flooring:

  1. Wet Pour Safety Flooring- hold unlimited design potential and can come in a variety of bright colours. Durable and cost-effective it is often known as ‘springy tarmac’ and can be laid onto any existing hard surface. Depths vary depending on the height of the play equipment.
  2. Safer Grass Matting- Delivering excellent grass reinforcement properties, safer grass matting is a great low maintenance alternative to other Playground Flooring options. It is laid directly onto well-drained grass with a mesh underlay and doesn’t require costly work to be done to the base.
  3. Artificial Grass- This maybe an appealing Playground Flooring choice if you want to brighten up a dull tarmac area or a boggy unusable area of grass or to meet BS EN 1177 standards, which sets the bar for safety standards around Playground Surfacing to minimise injury in play areas. Bridge Timber play offer five types of Artificial Grass: Clumber Artificial Grass, Newstead Artificial Grass, Sherwood Artificial Grass, Thoresby Artificial Grass and Wollaton Artificial Grass.
  4. Bonded Rubber Mulch- A brilliant natural alternative to traditional bark, with lower maintenance required and lower costs! Available in a variety of colours, durable, eco-friendly and suitable for year-round use.
